Liverpool and the Football World Say Their Final Goodbye to Diogo Jota and His Brother
Family, friends, teammates, and figures from the global football community gathered this Saturday to say a final farewell to Liverpool winger Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, a 25-year-old player for Penafiel. Both tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Zamora, which occurred between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
Liverpool, Present in Full Force
On Friday evening, a large group of Liverpool players arrived at the wake, including Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones, Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott, Alexis Mac Allister, Conor Bradley, and Darwin Núñez, accompanied by head coach Arne Slot. Others, like Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo, joined on Saturday.
The funeral took place at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, while the burial was held privately, reserved for close family and friends.
Former Liverpool players such as Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Caoimhin Kelleher a close friend of Jota who shared a touching tribute also attended. On Saturday, other figures like Thiago Alcântara and Fabinho joined the service.
Rúben Neves Emotional Tribute
Rúben Neves, Jota close friend and current Al Hilal player who played alongside him at Wolves and with the Portuguese national team helped carry his casket from the Capela da Ressurreição to the church.
André Silva casket was carried by his teammates from Penafiel.
A Farewell Surrounded by Icons
Several of Jota Portuguese national teammates attended, including Bruno Fernandes, Rúben Dias, Bernardo Silva, João Cancelo, Rui Silva, Renato Veiga, João Félix, Nélson Semedo, and Rui Patrício. Also present were current national team coach Roberto Martínez and former coach Fernando Santos.
Former internationals such as João Moutinho, José Fonte, Danilo Pereira, Adrien Silva, Ricardo, and André Horta were in attendance, along with Diogo Jota agent Jorge Mendes.
In a gesture of respect, Everton also sent an official delegation.
A farewell filled with sorrow, where the football world, together with the people of Gondomar and Jota’s family, paid tribute to a beloved and respected figure both on and off the pitch. Diogo Jota and his brother André leave behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of those who knew them.
