Arsenal Close in on the Premier League: The Race With City Explained
Mikel Arteta’s side defeated West Ham and moved to within just two matches of winning a Premier League title they have not lifted since 2004.
Arsenal took a massive step toward winning the Premier League after defeating West Ham 1-0 in a dramatic London derby. Mikel Arteta’s side restored their five-point advantage over Manchester City and moved within touching distance of ending their 22-year wait for the league title.
With only two rounds remaining, the Gunners are now in a commanding position, although Pep Guardiola’s City still have one game in hand that could keep the title race alive.
Leandro Trossard scored the decisive goal that sparked huge celebrations among Arsenal players and fans, bringing the North London club closer to their first Premier League crown since the famous “Invincibles” season of 2004.
Arsenal’s remaining schedule appears manageable. They will host already-relegated Burnley on May 18 before finishing the season away at Crystal Palace on May 24 at Selhurst Park.
Manchester City, meanwhile, still have a mathematical chance of retaining the title but face a far more demanding run-in. Guardiola’s side will play Crystal Palace on Wednesday in their game in hand before taking on Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 16.
City will then visit Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth, who are still fighting for European qualification, before closing the campaign at home against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
The Premier League title race is not over yet, but Arsenal now control their own destiny and are on the verge of completing one of the club’s most memorable seasons in recent history.
