Fulham 1-1 Newcastle United: Clever Muniz flick cancels out Murphy stunner

  • Newcastle United were hoping to bounce back from a defeat to Everton, but Fulham fought back to extend their unbeaten run in the league.

Fulham and Newcastle United shared the spoils in the Premier League after two late goals resulted in a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

Jacob Murphy silenced the home fans with a stunning strike in the 80th minute, only for Rodrigo Muniz to answer back and salvage a point for Alvaro Arbeloa's side.

Fulham went close with their first two chances, but Lukas Hornicek denied Oscar Bobb before Gonzalo Garcia headed onto the crossbar from the resulting corner in the 14th minute.

It was then Newcastle's turn to attack as Harvey Barnes forced Bernd Leno into a reflex save at the near post, and the Magpies saw a goal from Dan Burn ruled out after the half-hour mark, as Yoane Wissa fouled Timothy Castagne in the build-up.

Hornicek was called upon again before half-time, keeping out Josh King's volley from distance, while Barnes curled wide of the top-right corner after the break.

Sander Berge and Yoane Wissa then went close at either end, though both failed to hit the target, with the Fulham midfielder also seeing a penalty appeal waved away after a clumsy challenge from Burn.

Murphy then produced a special moment to finally get the better of Leno, cutting inside past Calvin Bassey before curling into the top-left corner.

However, Fulham needed just three minutes to respond at the other end, as Muniz flicked Cesar Palacios' deflected cross past Hornicek, with Burn getting a touch on the way through.

Both sides still had time to push for a winner, but neither goalkeeper would be beaten twice, as Leno kept out Lewis Hall before Ryan Sessegnon saw a half-volley clawed away by Hornicek in stoppage time.

Honours even at the Cottage

Both managers will feel a point was the least they deserved, with Fulham producing 0.62 expected goals (xG) from 11 attempts to Newcastle's 0.91 from nine attempts.

Leno and Hornicek will take much of the credit, making four and five saves respectively, though Matthias Jaissle will still rue his side's missed opportunities.

Newcastle created three Opta-defined big chances to Fulham's one, with Barnes missing two such opportunities for the Magpies.

It was a special occasion for King, who, just a day after receiving his first England call-up, became the first teenager to play in 50 Premier League games for Fulham.

He almost marked the day with a stunning volleyed goal, while he had the best pass accuracy in the final third (83.3%).

Arbeloa will see more pressure lifted off his shoulders with the Cottagers now three points clear of the relegation zone, as they enter the international break on the back of a four-match unbeaten run (W2 D2).

Fulham last strung together a longer such run between December and January last season, when they went six unbeaten.
