Federico Bernardeschi Speaks Out: “And If I Were Gay? What’s the Problem?”
Back in Serie A, Federico Bernardeschi isn’t just playing football again — he’s also speaking out loudly against homophobia in the game.
A Candid Confession
Federico Bernardeschi, former Fiorentina, Juventus, and Toronto player, now with Bologna, spoke openly on Bsmt about homophobia in Italian football. The Italian international recalled how he was targeted in his youth for the way he dressed and responded bluntly: “Twelve years ago I wore a skirt, and what’s the problem? They started saying I was gay. And if I were? What does it matter? I’d be proud. I take my hat off to those who have come out.”
The winger admitted that while he feels free to express himself now, it wasn’t always the case: “I was 20 years old at the time, and reading those words hurt me; I suffered.”
A Message of Freedom
Bernardeschi also reflected on the constant pressure footballers face: “I think, in general, we should always ask ourselves if the opinions others have of us are really that important in our lives.”
His words were a direct call for freedom and respect in a sport that still struggles with prejudice and stigma.
A New Chapter at Bologna
Beyond his statements, Bernardeschi is also embarking on a new chapter in Serie A. At 31, he says he’s happy to be back in Italy: “I found a wonderful group with important values, driven by the veteran players.”

So far, he has featured in five matches for Bologna (207 minutes), without goals or assists, but his biggest impact early on has been off the pitch: raising his voice against homophobia in football.
