The Mystery Around Luka Modrić Continues
The Croatian midfielder, currently recovering from a facial injury, has yet to decide whether he will activate his option to stay another season at AC Milan.
Uncertainty over his future
Luka Modrić, now 40 years old, is still undecided about his future, according to reports. The Croatian star and AC Milan agreed on a flexible contract last summer after his departure from Real Madrid, but no final decision has yet been made regarding an extension.
Milan happy, but waiting
The Italian club is very satisfied with his performance and would welcome his continuity. However, the decision also depends on Modrić himself, who is currently recovering from a serious injury suffered on April 26, when he fractured his left cheekbone and required surgery.
Milan felt his absence immediately, especially in their 2–0 defeat against Sassuolo.
Focus on the World Cup
At this stage, Modrić’s main priority is recovery in order to arrive in top condition for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico—what is expected to be his final major international tournament with Croatia.
He will turn 41 in September, making this likely his last appearance on the world stage.
Key role despite his age
Despite his age, Modrić has been heavily involved this season, playing 31 of 33 league matches, totaling 2,788 minutes, plus appearances in the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana.
His influence has been clear, and his absence was strongly felt by Milan in recent matches.
Decision still pending
Modrić must now decide in the coming weeks whether to extend his stay until 2027, which would take him close to his 42nd birthday. The final decision could also come before joining Croatia for their pre-World Cup friendlies against Belgium and Slovenia.
For now, the Croatian legend remains focused on recovery—and on one last major international challenge
