Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe Draw in Süper Lig Derby
The Süper Lig intercontinental derby between Galatasaray, playing at home, and José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe, ended in a 0-0 draw on Matchday 25 of the tournament. Despite missing their star striker, Mauro Icardi, the home team managed to maintain their points advantage over their rivals in the standings.
First Half: Intensity and Controversy
The match kicked off with the usual intensity of this classic, with a tough, hard-fought battle across the pitch. In the first 45 minutes, there were over 16 fouls, showing just how physical the contest was.
The controversy came when Fenerbahçe scored, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul on goalkeeper Fernando Muslera in the buildup. The decision sparked protests on the field and heated up tempers between the players. Then, in the 31st minute, Victor Osimhen went down inside the box after a push and demanded a penalty. When it wasn’t given, he turned towards Mourinho with a “silence” gesture, triggering a sideline confrontation between both benches and resulting in yellow cards for both coaches.
Second Half: Fenerbahçe Dominates, but Muslera Stands Tall
In the second half, Mourinho’s team, needing to close the gap in the standings, took control and created several scoring chances. The best one came in the 61st minute when Oydin sent in a cross from the left that swerved towards goal, forcing Muslera to dive and push it away with one hand. Just two minutes later, off a corner kick, Fenerbahçe had another golden opportunity in a chaotic goalmouth scramble, but once again, Muslera came up big with two back-to-back saves to keep his clean sheet intact.
With this result, Galatasaray, backed by solid defending from Osimhen and a standout performance from Muslera, remains at the top of the Süper Lig with 64 points. Meanwhile, Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe missed their chance to close the gap and stay second with 58 points, leaving a six-point difference between the two in the title race.
