Argentine forward Mauro Icardi, of Turkish club Galatasaray, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Thursday night's Europa League match against Tottenham, the club announced on Friday.

"Tests (...) revealed a tear and meniscus damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The rehabilitation process has already begun for our player, and his surgery is being planned," the club said in a statement.

Although the club did not specify a recovery timeline, Turkish sports media have ruled out the possibility of Icardi returning this season due to the severity of the injury and the long recovery period.

In last night's match, Galatasaray won 3-2. Icardi, 31, was carried off the pitch on a stretcher in the 76th minute after suffering the injury.
