Pavard: Marseille deserved to win Trophee des Champions
Marseille lost 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain, as the chance to clinch the Trophee des Champions passed them by.
Benjamin Pavard insisted Marseille would have been worthy winners of the Trophee des Champions, after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Marseille went down 4-1 on spot-kicks on Thursday, after a 2-2 draw with the European champions.
Mason Greenwood's penalty and Willian Pacho's own goal had flipped the match on its head late on, only for Goncalo Ramos to equalise for PSG in the 95th minute and take the match to penalties.
Goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier was then PSG's hero in the shoot-out as he saved two of Marseille's penalties.
But Pavard feels Marseille deserved victory.
"Disappointed, because if we'd been two or three minutes away from bringing the trophy back to Marseille," Pavard told Ligue 1+.
"I think we deserved to win, we found the gaps. Unfortunately, that goal at the end is a real pain. Now, we have to build on this match to get going. We also wasted some opportunities.
"I'm proud of the team."
Marseille lost 2-0 to Nantes last time out in Ligue 1, leaving them seven points behind second-place PSG and eight behind leaders Lens.
"The true face of OM is what we showed tonight, not what we showed against Nantes," Pavard added.
"We need to build on this mentality and the aggression we displayed from the first minute. We managed to maintain control of the ball. There are still competitions where we can win titles. There are many positives to take away from this match."
PSG boss Luis Enrique, meanwhile, credited the work Roberto De Zerbi is doing at Marseille.
"It was very intense," said Luis Enrique.
"We had a decent start to the match, but in the end, OM played very well; they deserved to be in the game. It was very difficult.
"They played better than us, although I still need to analyse the match. I have to congratulate De Zerbi, who everyone criticises. He's a very good coach."
