(VIDEO) Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher Reveals Why He Knew He Would Save Kylian Mbappé's Penalty
One of Liverpool's big heroes during the match against Real Madrid has spoken out, making it clear that he wasn't intimidated at all by Kylian Mbappé's presence.
This was stated by Caoimhin Kelleher, who saved a penalty from the superstar forward, an act that helped the "Reds" maintain their advantage. "I don't really look at the player too much," the goalkeeper told TNT Sports after the match when asked how it felt to face the Frenchman.
"I felt confident. I've saved two in the last week or so; I was confident, and thankfully I went the right way again." he added.
"It was a big result. It was a massive game for us. Obviously, they got the better of us the last few times against us in the Champions League. We wanted to come out tonight, put on a big performance, and the lads did really well."
Interview with Caoimhin Kelleher and Alexis Mac Allister
On the other hand, Argentine Alexis Mac Allister also commented on Liverpool's victory, where he scored a goal. "When you play teams like Real Madrid, it's always nice to score, but the most important thing is that we won it," Mac Allister said. "I think in a really good way, we dominated the game, we deserved it, we needed this guy (Kelleher) a couple of times but thank god he is there, and he really deserves it."
Gakpo came off the bench to give Liverpool breathing room in the final minutes of the match, and Mac Allister acknowledged that Liverpool's squad players will be crucial throughout the season.
"We know that the players that come in are important to finish the games," Mac Allister said. "If you want to win trophies, you need them. Of course, it's not nice to be on the bench, but we know that every guy that is here does the best when he comes in."
The Mbappé photo everyone is talking about
This was the moment captured by cameras during the game—an image that has gone viral on social media, which could be considered the perfect representation of the match he faced at Anfield.
Mbappé still struggling to find his form
With Vinícius Jr. sidelined due to injury, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for the French star to step up. However, Liverpool had other plans. In what was a tough visit, Carlo Ancelotti’s team ended up losing 2-0, with Mbappé’s missed penalty possibly marking the course of his journey at Real Madrid.
Mbappé’s missed penalty
In the 61st minute, the French forward took responsibility for the penalty kick but failed to convert it, opting for a shot to the right side, which was saved. This allowed Liverpool to maintain their 1-0 lead at that point.
This was Mbappé’s second missed penalty in the Champions League, after also failing against RB Leipzig in October 2021.
Mbappé’s with Real Madrid in the Champions League
The former PSG player has constantly been criticized for his finishing, and the numbers speak for themselves: he has scored just once in five Champions League matches for the Madrid team. In all competitions, he has netted nine goals, but more was expected of him.
Vinícius Jr. remains the team's top scorer under Carlo Ancelotti, with 12 goals, four of which came in the Champions League.
