Dzeko Keeps Mourinho's Champions League Hopes Alive
Once again, Edin Dzeko, who had already scored three goals in the 3-4 first-leg match in Switzerland, came to the rescue of José Mourinho and Fenerbahçe in the second qualifying round of the Champions League against Lugano. With a goal that equalized the score at 1-1, Dzeko led the Turkish team to qualification. Fenerbahçe will now face Lille from Ligue 1 in the next round.
Fenerbahçe faced the challenge with many difficulties. Despite a tough start, with Mohamed Mahmoud scoring for Lugano in the seventh minute, the Turkish team showed signs of hesitation. The equalizer came with Dzeko's goal in the 60th minute, and relief arrived with Sebastian Szymański’s 2-1 goal in the final moments.
Dzeko has been a key player for Fenerbahçe, scoring nine goals in seven matches, including friendlies and official games, since the beginning of Mourinho’s era at the club. His contribution has been crucial in keeping the team’s hopes alive in the competition.
In addition to Fenerbahçe, Qarabag, Apoel Nicosia, and Sparta Prague have also secured their qualification so far. Three more matches are scheduled for Tuesday and seven more for Wednesday to determine the remaining qualifiers.
