Thierry Henry criticizes Mbappé and Real Madrid
Thierry Henry did not hesitate to single out Kylian Mbappé as one of those responsible for Real Madrid's current slump. Following the recent loss to AC Milan in the Champions League (1-3) and the thrashing against Barcelona (0-4), the former French striker pointed out on CBS Sports that Mbappé's attitude on the field is not appropriate for someone playing the role of center forward. According to Henry, Mbappé’s lack of movement and projection in attack is frustrating for the team, especially since his position requires more drive and effort in every play.
Henry highlighted that Jude Bellingham, another of Real Madrid’s recent additions, has had to take on the work that should be Mbappé's responsibility. In his analysis, he criticized that it’s Bellingham who constantly seeks to break lines and stretch the team forward, while Mbappé remains less proactive than he should. "We’re not asking him to play like Didier Drogba, but he needs to put in the effort to run and create space," Henry commented, insisting that his compatriot must adapt to the role of a center forward.
The former player not only questioned Mbappé’s ability to adjust to Carlo Ancelotti's system but also emphasized that his attitude on the field is affecting the team’s dynamics. Henry observed that Bellingham has had to frequently drop back to help defend and then push the team forward in attack—a task that should be shared by the French striker. According to Henry, the situation is unsustainable if Real Madrid wants to achieve results this season.
Moreover, Henry stressed that it's not a matter of skills but of willpower. To him, Mbappé needs to make a greater effort, as he currently appears static and lacks the intensity needed for his position. "It’s understandable that there’s frustration within the team," Henry said, adding that Real Madrid cannot hope to win with a forward who does not meet expectations in attack or contribute to the team’s balance.
Henry’s comments have intensified the criticism directed at Mbappé during a critical moment for Real Madrid. The pressure on the French striker is mounting, and while his talent is undeniable, doubts about his role and commitment in Ancelotti's tactical scheme could have consequences for his future with the club.
