Bayern Goalkeeper Crisis Ahead Of Champions League Clash With Atalanta
Bayern faces an unexpected crisis before a crucial Champions League night. Injuries have piled up, and an unthinkable scenario could suddenly become reality in Munich.
A Goalkeeping Emergency In Munich
Bayern Munich are dealing with a serious goalkeeping crisis ahead of one of the most important matches of their season. As they prepare for the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 second leg against Atalanta, the German giants could arrive without any of their usual goalkeepers available.
The situation began with the injury to Manuel Neuer, who remains sidelined with a muscle tear and is not expected to return until after the international break. His backup, Jonas Urbig, also became a major doubt after suffering a concussion during the first leg against Atalanta.
Urbig’s availability now depends on passing the official DFL concussion protocol, leaving Bayern waiting for medical clearance before making a final decision.
Injuries Continue To Pile Up
The situation worsened over the weekend. Sven Ulreich, who had been forced back into action after more than a year without regular appearances, suffered a muscle tear during Bayern’s 1–1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.
Medical tests confirmed that Ulreich will be out for several weeks, leaving Bayern relying entirely on Urbig’s recovery timeline. German media reports suggest the young goalkeeper could still be cleared in time for the match, but the club’s medical staff has not yet given the final green light.
If Urbig fails to pass the protocol, Bayern would face the extraordinary situation of having no professional first-team goalkeeper available for a Champions League match.
The 16-Year-Old Who Could Make History
The crisis deepens further because Klanac, the team’s fourth goalkeeper, has also been sidelined with injury for some time. With four goalkeepers potentially unavailable, Bayern may have no choice but to turn to their youth academy.
That scenario brings Prescott, a 16-year-old goalkeeper, into the conversation. Within the club he is regarded as one of the most promising talents in Bayern’s youth system.
The leap would be extraordinary: going directly from the U19 squad to making a debut on a Champions League night.
A Potentially Historic Champions League Moment
For now, Bayern are hoping that Urbig receives medical clearance and avoids an emergency solution. But the possibility of a teenage goalkeeper starting such a high-stakes European match has already become a major talking point in Germany.
If it happens, it would mark one of the most unexpected debuts in recent Champions League history and a clear reflection of how injuries have pushed the Bavarian giants into an unprecedented situation.
