Michael Olise's avoidable red card proved costly as Herman Haugen's late leveller claimed a memorable 3-3 draw for Viking against Bayern Munich in Tuesday's Champions League classic.
Viking 3-3 Bayern Munich: Haugen levels late to claim memorable draw after Olise red
Viking claimed a memorable draw with Bayern Munich after Michael Olise's red card turned a thrilling Champions League contest on its head.
Olise was sent off for two bookings in the space of one second-half minute, and Viking made that advantage count when substitute Herman Haugen steered home from Zlatko Tripic's 90th-minute cross.
Harry Kane's double had earlier dragged Bayern level, cancelling out first-half goals from Gianni Stensness and Peter Christiansen, before Luis Diaz's 71st-minute finish was overshadowed by Olise's petulance soon after in a mistake that ultimately proved decisive.
Viking stunned the Bundesliga giants just 71 seconds in when Stensness nodded past Jonas Urbig from Tripic's right-sided corner.
Lennart Karl whipped wide in response before Olise, Diaz and Kane all tested Arild Ostbo without success, while Tom Bischof fired narrowly wide.
The Norwegian hosts doubled their lead seven minutes before half-time when Christiansen burst onto Erik Botheim's throughball, brushing off Nathaniel Brown before firing into the bottom-right corner.
Henrik Bjordal had a nervy moment soon into the second half, with his challenge from behind on Joshua Kimmich surviving a VAR review for a potential Bayern penalty.
Bayern did get their spot-kick shortly after, with Kane tucking into the bottom-right corner after a VAR review penalised Kristoffer Haugen for his challenge on Konrad Laimer.
Kane levelled with his second strike on the hour, heading home from Kimmich’s clipped cross, before Diaz saw a cute finish that would have made it 3-2 ruled out for offside.
However, Diaz would not be denied for much longer as he stroked into the roof of the net after Laimer selflessly squared with a volley across goal from Kane's delicate clip in behind.
Olise's moment of madness brought more jeopardy just two minutes later when the France winger was first cautioned for a foul on Henrik Heggheim, before a second yellow followed for throwing the ball at Tripic.
Viking capitalised in the dying minutes as Tripic lofted in a left-sided cross, with Herman Haugen rising the highest at the back post and writing his name into the history of a massive European scalp.
Kane form continues as Bayern slip up
Before this clash, only Malta's Valletta (90% – nine defeats in 10) had a higher loss percentage than Viking's 84.6% (11 losses in 13) among all teams to play 10+ European Cup/Champions League matches.
The Eliteserien leaders put a halt to a poor run in Europe, however, claiming a point that will live long in the memory of Norwegian football supporters.
For large parts of Tuesday, it looked like the game would again belong to Kane, who has 36 goals in 40 Champions League games since turning 30. That tally is one more than the great Lionel Messi scored in his 30s in this competition (35 goals in 48 appearances).
Only Cristiano Ronaldo in April 2018 (11) has enjoyed a longer run of successive games with a goal in the European Cup/Champions League than Kane's ongoing streak of nine.
His free-scoring form means Bayern have scored 65 goals across 23 games since a team last kept a clean sheet against them in Europe (3-0 loss to Feyenoord in January 2025).
But Olise's needless sending-off turned a thrilling contest on its head once again, and Vincent Kompany will now be without his star man for Bayern's next game against last season's finalists Arsenal.
Kompany will feel his side did more than enough for all three points, though. Bayern accumulated a massive 3.51 expected goals (xG) to Viking's meagre 0.56, but that should not take away from a momentous outing for the hosts.
