“Dibu” Martínez vs Lille: Not Welcome in France
Aston Villa defeated Lille 0-1 in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16. However, the biggest story of the night was not the victory for the “Villans,” but the atmosphere surrounding Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez.
"Dibu" did not exactly receive a warm welcome in France. Lille supporters made their feelings clear with a banner in the stands that read: “Martínez is not welcome.” From the moment his name was announced in the stadium, loud boos toward the Argentine goalkeeper echoed throughout the venue.
The Origin of the Conflict With France
There are several reasons that explain the tense relationship between the goalkeeper and a large part of the French fan base. The most well-known dates back to the 2022 World Cup final. The historic save by Emiliano Martínez against Randal Kolo Muani in the final minute of extra time, followed by his performance in the penalty shootout, turned him into a very unpopular figure in France.
His celebrations and later comments were also seen by many French fans as provocative and disrespectful, which ultimately made him a highly controversial figure in the country.
Lille Still Remembers the Conference League
If the relationship in France was already complicated, in Lille the resentment runs even deeper. Two years ago, in the Conference League, Aston Villa and Lille faced each other in the quarterfinals. In that series, which was decided on penalties, Emiliano Martínez saved two shots and, true to his style, celebrated by dancing in front of the home supporters.
The fans have not forgotten that moment and made sure to remind him of it from the very first minute this week. However, that hostile environment seems to motivate the Argentine goalkeeper. During the match he made three key saves and every time he touched the ball he looked comfortable, even appearing to enjoy the atmosphere.
Getting inside the mind of Emiliano Martínez seems nearly impossible for opponents. Once again he came out on top against Lille and left France with a smile.
Aston Villa took a very valuable result away from home and will now decide the tie at Villa Park. Waiting there will be a determined Lille, who will surely have extra motivation: knock out the English side on their home ground and, in the process, get revenge on Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez.
The second leg promises to be an intense matchup.
