Rafael Leão’s Emotional Message After Wearing Cristiano’s No. 7

  • The Portugal forward swapped his usual No. 17 for the national team’s most iconic shirt and explained why the moment meant so much to him.

Leão Takes Cristiano’s No. 7

Rafael Leão experienced a very different night with Portugal. The forward, who usually wears No. 17 for the national team, took the field in the No. 7 shirt long associated with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The change came after Cristiano Ronaldo left the Portugal camp and coincided with a 4-2 victory over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.

For Leão, it was far more than just another number on his back. After the match, he admitted that wearing it carried special meaning because of the player who turned it into one of the most recognizable shirts in world football.

“Cristiano Has Been My Idol Since I Was a Kid”

Leão did not hide his emotion after the match and explained that Ronaldo has been a reference for him since the early years of his football journey.

“Wearing the number seven was something special for me, because Cristiano has been my idol since I was a child,” he explained.

The forward also added a personal detail that made the moment even more meaningful: “My children were also born on the 7th, so I am so happy.”

The Weight of a Different Shirt

Wearing Portugal’s No. 7 inevitably brings comparisons with Cristiano, who made the shirt his own throughout much of his historic international career.

Leão said he was fully aware of what the number represented and that his intention was to honor the meaning behind the shirt. “I did my best to respect this number, this shirt,” he said.

It does not necessarily mean a permanent change of number, but it was still a highly symbolic image: Portugal playing without Cristiano and another of the team’s biggest attacking stars wearing the shirt that had been reserved for him for so many years.

Portugal Now Turns to Norway

Jorge Jesus’ side will quickly have to turn its attention back to football after a week marked by Cristiano’s departure and everything surrounding the national team camp.

Portugal will now face Norway, with Leão once again among the players expected to take on a bigger role in attack.

For now, the Portugal forward already has a memory he is unlikely to forget: the night he wore his idol’s No. 7 shirt and helped Portugal win without Cristiano Ronaldo on the field.
