Scaloni Reveals If He Has Spoken With Messi About the 2026 World Cup
The Argentina national team continues its preparations with eyes firmly set on the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Amid uncertainty over Lionel Messi’s future with the Albiceleste, head coach Lionel Scaloni was asked in a press conference about the captain’s plans.
While Scaloni kept the mystery alive, he also made it clear that Argentina already has a strong foundation of players heading into the next global showcase.
What did Scaloni say about Messi’s participation?
“I have not spoken with Messi about the next World Cup. Whatever he decides is fine,” Scaloni stated. The Argentine captain, who lifted the trophy in Qatar 2022, has openly admitted he is unsure about being part of the squad in 2026, fueling speculation around his decision.
The coach emphasized that Argentina already has a consolidated core of players and that the final roster won’t see drastic changes:
“When we are told how many players will go to the World Cup, we will make decisions. We have a base for the tournament, and everyone knows it,” he added.
What does Scaloni expect from the match against Ecuador?
Argentina will close its South American Qualifiers campaign against Ecuador, a rival Scaloni described as one of the strongest in the region:
“It is one of the best national teams in the world, and they will make things difficult for us,” he explained, highlighting the work of coaches such as Gustavo Alfaro, Félix Sánchez Bas, and now Sebastián Beccacece.
The manager confirmed that Lautaro Martínez and Alexis Mac Allister will see minutes, taking advantage of the enforced absences of Messi and Cristian “Cuti” Romero.

How does Scaloni view the present and future of Argentina?
Scaloni compared the current journey to the road to Qatar 2022:
“New young players have emerged who give us more verticality, some who play well with the ball. The idea of the game is not different, the identity remains the same,” he assured.
He also acknowledged Nicolás Otamendi, who played his last home qualifier, confirming he will wear the armband against Ecuador.
Finally, Scaloni touched on the recently announced Finalissima against Spain, which will take place next year:
“It’s one of the best national teams in the world, and they play a style of football that fans love.”
