The second round of Group C at the WAFCON 2026 brings together two teams arriving under completely different circumstances. Egypt is desperate to bounce back after a heavy defeat in its opening match, while Malawi, the tournament's biggest surprise so far, looks to make another statement following its historic victory over Nigeria.

Egypt Needs an Immediate Response

Egypt's opening match could hardly have gone worse. The North African side suffered a 6-0 defeat against Zambia, equaling the heaviest loss in its WAFCON history and putting its hopes of reaching the knockout stage in serious jeopardy.

Now, there is virtually no margin for error. Another defeat would leave the Egyptians on the brink of elimination, making this a must-win match.

From a tactical standpoint, Egypt must regain the defensive organization it lost during the second half against Zambia, when it conceded five of its six goals. Goalkeeper Maha Shehata was one of the few bright spots in the opening match, making six saves, while the team will aim to control possession for longer periods to avoid being exposed in transition.

Malawi Looks to Prove the Upset Was No Fluke

If one team stole the spotlight on opening matchday, it was Malawi.

Making its first-ever appearance at the WAFCON, Malawi stunned defending champion Nigeria with a remarkable 3-2 victory, becoming the first tournament debutant to defeat the reigning champions and the first team ever to score three goals against the Super Falcons in a single WAFCON match.

Much of the credit belongs to sisters Temwa Chawinga and Tabitha Chawinga. Temwa scored twice and was the standout performer, while Tabitha also found the back of the net, making them the first sisters ever to score in the same WAFCON match.

Tactically, Malawi proved to be extremely dangerous on the counterattack. Its pace on the wings, the movement of the Chawinga sisters, and the ability to exploit open spaces were enough to dismantle one of Africa's strongest defenses.

A victory would move Malawi within touching distance of a quarterfinal berth in its first-ever appearance at the tournament.

A First-Ever WAFCON Meeting

This will be the first meeting between Egypt and Malawi in WAFCON history.

While Egypt fights to keep its tournament alive, Malawi will look to prove that its victory over Nigeria was no coincidence and continue writing one of the most remarkable stories of this year's competition.
