United States Secure Big Win over Vietnam Despite Missed Chances
The United States women's national team (USWNT) defeated Vietnam 3-0 in their opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, but will need to improve their accuracy if they want to secure their third consecutive World Cup title.
The USWNT dominated possession and created numerous chances, but they were wasteful in front of goal, finishing with only three shots on target. Sophia Smith scored two goals in the first half, and Lindsey Horan added a third goal in the second half.
Vietnam, who are making their first appearance at the World Cup, were never really in the game, but they did have a moment of joy when their goalkeeper, Thi Kim Thanh Tran, saved a penalty from Alex Morgan.
The USWNT will face a much tougher challenge in their next match, against the Netherlands, who they defeated in the final of the 2019 World Cup. If the USWNT wants to win their third consecutive title, they will need to be more clinical in front of goal.
