Postecoglou lauds 'disciplined' Johnson after brace in Southampton win
Brennan Johnson played a starring role in Tottenham's win over Southampton, scoring two goals and earning a penalty for the hosts.
Ange Postecoglou paid tribute to a "disciplined" Brennan Johnson display following his brace in Tottenham Hotspur's 3-1 victory over Southampton.
Spurs ended a run of four successive Premier League games without a win, while confirming their opponents' relegation to the Championship.
Johnson scored twice in the first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, taking his league tally for the season into double figures, the third time he has done so in his career.
He is also the first Spurs player to score 15 or more goals in all competitions in a season, other than Harry Kane or Son Heung-min, since Gareth Bale in 2020-21 (also 16).
The Wales international was also fouled for the penalty that led to Mathys Tel sealing the win from the spot, and Postecoglou hailed his performance.
"He's always a goal threat, and he's important to us," Postecoglou told SpursPlay. "He's just so disciplined at always being in the right areas, and the areas we need him to be.
"Sometimes, I feel like we let him down by not being disciplined with our football in the front third, because he's always there.
"His general play was really good, not just his goals, so I'm really pleased for him."
Spurs' victory was a timely one ahead of their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.
The hosts were worthy winners in the contest, ending the game with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.21 from their 13 shots to Southampton's 1.04 from their 12 attempts.
"The first half, I thought was excellent. We were really disciplined, really well-organised. We always looked a threat going forward," Postecoglou added.
"That's probably as threatening as we've looked. We scored two goals, and had one disallowed.
"The second half, not so much. We became way too passive without the ball, and not aggressive enough with the ball - we didn't keep possession as well as we should have.
"I think today was important. To get a win, get some goals and get some positivity around the place."
