Van Dijk hints at movement Liverpool contract situation
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is out of contract at the end of the season, but he suggested that a new deal might not be far away.
Virgil van Dijk hinted there has been movement on his contract situation with Liverpool, with an outcome potentially not far away.
While Liverpool have impressed by going 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League, there has been a shadow cast over their season with key players' contracts expiring at the end of the season.
Alongside Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both in the last year of their deals at Anfield, with the latter being widely reported to be on the way to Real Madrid.
But after being asked about his own future, Van Dijk gave a more encouraging response.
"There is progress, yeah," he said, as reported by the Daily Mail.
When pushed as to exactly what that meant, and whether he would be staying at the club beyond this season, he replied: "I don’t know, we’ll see."
Understandably, the Liverpool captain did not want to reveal too much and explained that he would not go into any further detail when asked to elaborate more.
"Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see," he said.
"I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again [at Fulham]. We wanted to reward them, but I ask them to be there again on Sunday and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us."
Liverpool were beaten 3-2 away to Fulham on Sunday, ending their unbeaten away record in the Premier League this season.
Next up for the Reds is a home game against West Ham United, with the hosts needing just 11 more points to mathematically confirm the Premier League title.
Since he made his Liverpool debut in January 2018, Van Dijk has made the second-most clearances of any Premier League defender (991), trailing only James Tarkowski (1,427).
Only Tarkowski (1,807) has won more duels among defenders in the top flight in that time than Van Dijk (1,223), with the centre-back having played a part in 97 league clean sheets.
