Super-sub Mateta earns Palace a comeback win
Jean-Philippe Mateta came off the bench to score a second-half double as Crystal Palace came from behind to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 at Selhurst Park.
A sluggish first-half burst into life as Aaron Ramsdale was forced into a magnificent double save, first denying Yeremy Pino from range and then keeping out the rebound from Daniel Munoz.
The visitors took the lead shortly before half-time with their first shot on target as William Osula finished from close range after Jacob Murphy and Lewis Miley had combined down the right flank.
Osula went close to a second after the break as he latched on to a loose pass, but he was denied by the outstretched foot of Palace keeper Dean Henderson.
Jefferson Lerma headed against the crossbar as Palace upped the pressure, and their positive play was rewarded when substitute Mateta headed home in the 80th minute, scoring in the Premier League for the first time since the beginning of January.
Palace's comeback was complete in the fourth minute of stoppage-time, with Mateta slamming home from the penalty spot after Sven Botman's tug on Lerma's shirt.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe labelled the defeat as "harsh" as his team's European ambitions were dealt a further blow.
"The defeat is harsh on us because we controlled the majority of the first half and phases of the second," he said.
"The goal we conceded at the end is really, really poor from our perspective.
"It's becoming difficult for us, with how things are going for us, especially when protecting a lead.
"I thought we were in total control with 60 minutes gone, but their substitutes made a difference. Jean-Philippe Mateta in particular proved a difficult customer for us to deal with.
"The defeat is harsh on us because we control."
Newcastle has now have dropped 25 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season – five more than any other side.
Palace boss Oliver Glasner chose to rotate some of his key players after Palace's exploits against Fiorentina in the UEFA Conference League last week.
"To get the turnaround and get the win is a lot of credit to the players. We had a great impact from the bench again, which is good," he said.
"It's not easy when you play every three days. Your energy levels are sometimes a bit low. It helped us give some players some rest. Others also did really well and worked hard. It is a boost for the players and boost for Selhurst Park.
"It's not always easy to create momentum. And then you have to keep it and not throw it away. We are on track."
