Own goals help Lille gatecrash top eight
Lille gatecrashed the top eight of the Champions League standings and booked an automatic place in the last 16 by crushing hapless Feyenoord 6-1.
Osame Sahraoui struck from an acute angle to put the host side ahead after just four minutes, and though Feyenoord levelled 10 minutes later through Santiago Gimenez's header, its joy would not last.
Three own goals – two from Gernot Trauner and one from David Hancko – took the game away from the Eredivisie club, with all three coming from low crosses into the six-yard box.
Jonathan David curled home in the 74th minute and Remy Cabella completed the rout with 10 minutes to play with a header into an empty net, as Lille recorded their biggest ever win in Europe.
Lille, which finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season, had to come through two preliminary knockout rounds to even reach the league phase, but this victory ensured it inched ahead of Atalanta and Aston Villa to finish seventh.
Feyenoord finished 19th with 13 points, and will face either Milan or PSV in the play-offs later this month.
