Roma edges past 10-man Porto in Europa League
Paulo Dybala inspired Roma to a 3-2 second-leg win over 10-man Porto in the Europa League, clinching a 4-3 aggregate success that takes the Giallorossi into the last 16.
A dismal week for Italian clubs in Europe had already seen Milan, Atalanta and Juventus eliminated from the Champions League.
Roma was at risk of joining them after a draw in the first leg in Portugal, with Porto then scoring first through Samu Aghehowa's overhead kick.
But Dybala scored twice in the space of five minutes before half-time to put the Serie A side in control of the tie.
Roma missed a series of opportunities to add to its lead despite Porto's Stephen Eustaquio being sent off, and it had a narrow escape when Samu hit the post on the counter-attack.
There was to be no smash and grab from the visitor, though, as a clinching third goal from Niccolo Pisilli meant substitute Devyne Rensch's late own goal did not prove costly.
Late drama in the match between Bodo/Glimt and Twente was rather more consequential as three goals in stoppage time took their second leg to extra-time before the Norwegian outfit won 5-2 and 6-4 on aggregate.
Glimt was heading out as the second leg was level at 1-1 when the clock passed 90 minutes, only for a chaotic sequence to see the tie tilt back and forth.
Mees Hilgers' own goal levelled the tie in the second minute of stoppage time, before Brice Wembangomo struck two minutes later to have Glimt on the brink. Sem Steijn's 96th-minute riposte kept Twente in the tie and triggered an additional period.
The margins remained fine, but the goal decision system found in Sondre Fet's favour as Steijn attempted a last-gasp clearance, then a second Twente own goal, this time from Arno Verschueren, gave Glimt breathing space at last.
That tie was rather tighter than the encounter between AZ and Galatasaray that saw the Dutch side advance 6-3 on aggregate.
AZ was 4-1 up from the home leg before extending its advantage with away goals from Seiya Maikuma and Denso Kasius either side of half-time.
Victor Osimhen responded for Gala within a minute of Kasius making it 2-0 on the night, with Roland Sallai then leveller the second leg at 2-2, yet it was too little, too late for the host side.
Elsewhere in the early kick-offs, FCSB won 2-0 at home to PAOK to complete a 4-1 triumph.
In the day's later kick-offs, Luka Sucic scored twice as Real Sociedad routed Midtjylland 5-2 to book its place in the last 16.
Brais Mendez had already taken advantage of a defensive mix-up to open the scoring by the time the Croatian midfielder swept into an unguarded goal after lovely work for La Real's second.
Adam Buksa netted from the penalty spot before Dario Osorio thumped in a stunning equaliser, but Sucic drilled home on the stroke of half-time to restore La Real's lead.
Dani Silva's red card for a high foot had the visitors even more up against it at Anoeta, and Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty coupled with Orri Oskarsson last-minute effort secured a 7-3 aggregate win.
In Amsterdam, 10-man Ajax progressed 3-2 on aggregate despite being beaten 2-1 at home by Union Saint-Gilloise after extra-time.
Kevin Mac Allister's 16th-minute opener preceded a first career red card for Davy Klaasen for deliberate handball, from which Promise David rolled in the resulting penalty to leave the hosts – 2-0 winners in the first leg – stunned at Johan Cruyff Arena.
Ajax managed to hold out for extra-time, though, and Christian Burgess was harshly penalised for handball from Bertrand Traore's ball into the area, leaving Kenneth Taylor to coolly side-foot into the bottom-left corner from the resulting spot-kick.
There was almost late drama when the VAR checked for a last-gasp foul from Ajax keeper Remko Pasveer on Kevin Rodriguez, but it was deemed there was no infringement and Ajax survived.
Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce played out a back-and-forth 2-2 draw at Anderlecht to seal a 5-2 aggregate triumph.
Having taken an early lead through Youssef En-Nesyri after shambolic defending from the host, Fener gifted an equaliser with Luis Vazquez the beneficiary.
Vazquez lifted a second into the roof of the net from six yards to give Anderlecht brief hope, but Yusuf Akcicek nodded in to restore parity as Fener got the job done at Lotto Park.
Rounding out the action, Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen defeated Robbie Keane's Ferencvaros 3-0 to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg and progress 3-1 over two legs.
