At 46 years old, Tom Brady Runs the 40-Yard Dash Faster Than When he Was 22
At 46 years old, Tom Brady, considered the greatest player in NFL history, ran the 40-yard dash faster this Thursday than when he was 22.
Brady, who retired in February 2023, underwent one of the main tests of the NFL Combine, a platform where college football athletes showcase their skills to NFL talent scouts, hoping to be selected by one of the league's 32 teams in the annual Draft.
"I'm working out, let's take some photos and videos and maybe just maybe try the 40-yard dash," Brady said in a video he posted on his social media as he headed to a workout he organized to test himself.
The former quarterback, who won six championship rings with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recreated his participation as a rookie in that test in 2000 when he clocked 5.28 seconds, one of the slowest times in history, which he surpassed this Tuesday by stopping the clock at 5.12 seconds.
The record for the fastest speed in the 40-yard dash is 4.22 seconds set by today's Kansas City Chiefs receiver, John Ross, dating back to 2017.
In the video, where Brady is encouraged by some friends and his personal trainer, the 15-time Pro Bowl selection wore black sportswear and white sneakers.
At the end, upon seeing that he beat the time he recorded 24 years ago, he challenged himself to do it again after he turns 47.
"We did it, and next year we'll do it faster," he said.
Tom Brady was never known for his speed. At the NFL Combine 24 years ago, he was not one of the league's most desired prospects.
He was selected 199th overall in the sixth round by the New England Patriots as a backup quarterback, something that changed from his second year in the NFL when he triumphed in the first of the seven Super Bowls he won, making him a future Hall of Fame member.
