Patrick Mahomes, better than Tom Brady... at his age
Patrick Mahomes, quarterback and champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, was crowned this Sunday as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of Super Bowl LVIII, marking his third distinction in his career and keeping up with Tom Brady, considered the greatest player in history, who has obtained five.
Mahomes led the Chiefs to victory in overtime with a score of 25-22 against the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the game, he threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns, the second one coming in the final play of overtime.
The 28-year-old quarterback has been named MVP in Super Bowl LIV, LVII, and LVIII, which he has won over the past five years, one more than Brady had at the same age. The only NFL title game he lost was in Super Bowl LV, precisely against Tom Brady, who was then playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Brady, who is the all-time leader in Super Bowl wins with seven, had three appearances in the NFL title game and two victories at Mahomes' age. Mahomes now has four appearances and three championship rings.
His third MVP award also allowed Patrick to tie with Hall of Famer and San Francisco 49ers legend, Joe Montana. This accolade places the Texas-born player ahead of historical quarterbacks like Bart Starr of the Green Bay Packers, Terry Bradshaw of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Eli Manning of the New York Giants, each with two MVPs.
Patrick Mahomes was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 10th overall pick of the first round of the 2017 Draft. Alongside his three Super Bowl wins and MVP titles, he has been named the Most Valuable Player of the Season twice and has made six Pro Bowl selections.
Throughout history, quarterbacks dominate the MVP designations with 33 awards in 58 editions of the Super Bowl, followed by receivers with eight and running backs with seven. The defensive position that has won this award most often is linebacker, with four.
