The Record Mahomes and the Chiefs Are Chasing in the 2024 NFL Season
The Kansas City Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, are aiming for a historic achievement in the 2024 NFL season. They want to be the first team in the Super Bowl era to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy three times in a row.
The Chiefs, who won Super Bowls LVII and LVIII, are the favorites to win Super Bowl LIX, set for February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
In the past five seasons, the Chiefs have made it to four Super Bowls, winning in 2019, 2022, and 2023. The only team to have beaten them in that stretch was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by Tom Brady, who has the most Super Bowl rings with seven. The Bucs defeated the Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl LV during the 2020 season.
Despite that loss, Andy Reid’s team has been a dominant force, winning three Lombardi trophies (LIV, LVII, and LVIII). They've also captured four AFC championships in five tries and eight straight division titles in the AFC West.
None of this would have been possible without Patrick Mahomes. At just 28, he already has three Super Bowl rings and three Super Bowl MVP awards. His achievements are comparable to Tom Brady's at the same age, although Brady eventually ended up with seven Super Bowl wins and five MVPs.
With Mahomes playing at his best, the Chiefs are not just aiming to win their fourth title (their first was in Super Bowl IV) but also to make history with three consecutive championships.
Winning three Super Bowls in a row would top legendary dynasties like the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s, who won four Super Bowls but only had two back-to-back wins, and the San Francisco 49ers of the 1980s, who also won four titles but never managed three straight.
The only team to have won three titles in a row was before the NFL merged with the AFL in 1970. The Green Bay Packers pulled off this feat twice: first in the National Championship in 1929, 1930, and 1931, and then again in 1965, Super Bowl I, and Super Bowl II for the 1966 and 1967 seasons.
While the first set of titles happened before the leagues merged, if the Chiefs manage to win three in a row now, they'd cement themselves as the most dominant dynasty in the NFL.
