Piastri wins in Bahrain and closes in on Norris for F1 lead
Oscar Piastri (McLaren) took the win at the Bahrain Grand Prix, the fourth race of the Formula 1 season, held this Sunday at the Sakhir circuit. The 24-year-old Aussie claimed his fourth career win in F1 — and his second of the season, after his triumph in China. His teammate, Britain’s Lando Norris, finished third, which was enough for him to stay on top of the championship standings.
George Russell (Mercedes) came in second, though his result is under review for possibly misusing DRS — which could lead to a penalty. Still, with a podium finish, Norris keeps the lead in the championship with 77 points, just three ahead of Piastri, who also bagged pole position and the fastest lap of the race.
Two-time world champ Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) had a race to forget, finishing 16th. Meanwhile, fellow Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Williams) had to retire just ten laps from the end. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) crossed the line in fourth, right ahead of new teammate Lewis Hamilton, the four-time world champion.
Verstappen off pace as others shine
Reigning champ Max Verstappen (Red Bull) had a quiet race, finishing sixth and never really threatening the top spots. Behind him were the French duo — Pierre Gasly (Alpine) in seventh and Esteban Ocon (Haas) in eighth. Yuki Tsunoda, driving the second Red Bull, came in ninth, while young Brit Oliver Bearman (Haas) scored his first-ever F1 point by finishing tenth.
Next up is the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, taking place next weekend on the fast and twisty street circuit in Jeddah, right by the Red Sea.
