How Alain Prost Shaped Oscar Piastri’s Path to F1 Stardom and Title Contention
As the 2025 Formula 1 season enters its decisive stretch, Oscar Piastri leads the drivers’ standings for McLaren—and much of his ascent can be traced to the influence of legendary four-time world champion Alain Prost.
Speaking publicly at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Prost detailed how he was central in helping Piastri break into top-line motorsport. In his capacity as Alpine’s non-executive director, Prost was the driving force behind pushing Renault to sign the talented Australian to its academy program in 2020, despite initial reluctance from the French outfit’s management.
Prost said he recognized Piastri’s intelligence and race craft back in his junior days and was insistent that Renault not miss the opportunity, especially after watching him excel in Formula 3 and Formula 2.
According to Prost, Piastri reminded him of himself, citing the McLaren driver’s ability to execute overtakes with timing and cunning. That kind of race awareness—choosing the right moment, the right corner, the right risk—is a hallmark of Prost’s own storied career, earning him the nickname “The Professor” in his peak F1 years.
From Alpine to McLaren: The Making of a Title Contender
After joining the Alpine Academy, Piastri spent two seasons under the Renault umbrella before making the high-profile switch to McLaren in 2023. That move, prompted by a contract row famously made public on social media, set in motion his rapid rise to the F1 elite.
Now, with twelve races completed, Piastri sits eight points ahead of teammate Lando Norris, with McLaren leading both championship tables after notching nine wins from the opening rounds.
Prost’s early mentorship and support have clearly paid dividends. Not only has Piastri demonstrated maturity and strategic skill beyond his years, but he has also weathered the pressure of a closely fought intra-team rivalry—further exemplified by his measured approach after the costly collision with Norris in Canada, an incident that did not destabilize the team’s cohesion.
A Champion’s Backing, and a Title Within Reach
Prost’s recent comments underscore his continued belief in Piastri’s pedigree. He argued that Piastri’s combination of natural speed and intellectual approach should make him a consistent title threat, and not just a flash-in-the-pan. To Prost, the “best should win” and he sees Piastri as part of that rare class of intelligent, technically astute drivers who sustain championship-caliber performances.
As the championship battle intensifies and McLaren strives to maintain its dominance, the impact of Prost’s early guidance is impossible to ignore. Whether Piastri claims his first world title this season or not, one thing is clear: he is racing not just with McLaren’s backing, but with the stamp of approval from one of the sport’s most revered champions.
