Burundi will look for its first points after a narrow opening defeat, while Algeria enters Matchday 2 of Group I after beginning its AFCON 2027 Qualifiers campaign with a victory.
Burundi will host Algeria on Tuesday, September 29, on Matchday 2 of Group I in the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers. How Burundi Arrive
Burundi opened the group stage with a 1-0 defeat against Togo at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé.
The only goal arrived in the 17th minute. Karim Dermane received a pass from Zuberu Sharani and struck from the edge of the box to give the hosts all three points.
Burundi pushed for an equalizer and came particularly close in the 50th minute, when Elie Mokono’s long-range effort hit the crossbar. The Swallows ultimately left Lomé without a point and will now look for a response at home.
How Algeria Arrive
Algeria made a much stronger start, defeating Zambia 3-1 at the Stade Hocine Aït Ahmed in Tizi Ouzou.
The Desert Foxes needed only two minutes to take the lead through Jaouen Hadjam. Fashion Sakala equalized for Zambia in the 57th minute, briefly putting the hosts under pressure.
Ibrahim Maza restored Algeria’s advantage in the 67th minute after being set up by Mohamed Amine Amoura, before Anis Hadj-Moussa added the third seven minutes later to secure the victory.
Algeria Looks to Strengthen Its Position in Group I
After Matchday 1, Algeria and Togo each have three points, while Burundi and Zambia remain without a point.
Group I does not contain any of the three automatically qualified AFCON 2027 host nations, meaning the teams finishing first and second after six matchdays will qualify directly for the finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
For Burundi, collecting points at home would provide an immediate response to the defeat in Lomé. Algeria, meanwhile, has an opportunity to start qualifying with consecutive victories and strengthen its position before the campaign resumes in November.
