Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone meet on Matchday 2 of Group E in the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers. Both teams are looking for their first points after losing their opening games.
Equatorial Guinea will face Sierra Leone on Monday, September 28, in Matchday 2 of the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers. The match will be played at the Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé, Cameroon, with kickoff scheduled for 12:00 PM ET / 9:00 AM PT, and will be available LIVE in the United States on beIN SPORTS.
How Equatorial Guinea Arrive
The Nzalang Nacional opened their Group E campaign with a 2-0 defeat against DR Congo in Kinshasa. The hosts took the lead after only four minutes when Chancel Mbemba headed home a corner delivered by Arthur Masuaku.
Equatorial Guinea attempted to respond and created opportunities as the match progressed, but could not find an equalizer. Yoane Wissa scored DR Congo’s second goal in the 72nd minute to secure all three points, leaving the Equatoguineans searching for their first result of the campaign.
How Sierra Leone Arrive
Sierra Leone also suffered defeat on Matchday 1, although in dramatically different circumstances. The Leone Stars led Zimbabwe 2-0 at halftime after goals from Alie Conteh in the seventh minute and Sallieu Tarawallie in the 27th.
Everything changed after the break. Marshall Munetsi reduced the deficit in the 72nd minute, Tawanda Chirewa equalized four minutes later and Munetsi struck again in the 88th to complete an extraordinary 3-2 comeback for Zimbabwe.
A Direct Battle for the First Points in Group E
Monday’s matchup brings together the two teams that finished the opening round without a point. DR Congo and Zimbabwe both started Group E with victories, increasing the importance of a response from Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone in a qualifying campaign consisting of only six games.
The format adds further significance. Group E does not contain any of the three automatically qualified AFCON 2027 hosts, meaning the top two teams will qualify directly for the tournament in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
