Ángel Di María Reveals He Rejected a Lucrative Saudi Arabian Offer Before Returning to Benfica
Ángel Di María, the Argentine player for Benfica in Portugal, revealed in a recent interview that he turned down a huge offer from a Saudi Arabian club after his successful run with the Argentina National Team in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, just before confirming his return to the Portuguese club.
Tempting Offer from Saudi Arabia
Di María shared the details of the offer he received, explaining that it was an incredibly tempting proposal: "I had so many offers, with numbers I had never seen in writing before. And with my family, we said 'no, we're going to Lisbon, we want to go back to Benfica.'" Despite receiving a second offer that was even higher, he continued to turn it down. "The truth is, I got an offer from Saudi Arabia. I don’t have an agent, a friend manages everything for me and helps with everything. The offer comes in, I say no. Then another offer comes, more than double from the same club. I say no again," he explained.
Decision Made: Returning to Benfica
In the end, Di María decided to return to Lisbon to continue his career at Benfica, where he had played from 2007 to 2010. After reflecting with his family about his future, the player clarified that he wasn’t interested in moving to Saudi Arabia at this stage of his career. "If that offer comes again, I think it’s already over, I don’t have the desire to go to a place like that at the end of my career," he said.
Di María also emphasized the affection he has always received from Benfica fans, mentioning that he feels "at home" at the club. He also discussed his retirement from the Argentina National Team, highlighting the importance of giving space to younger players so they can head into the 2026 World Cup with match rhythm.
