Another Goal by Sergio Ramos Couldn’t Prevent Monterrey's Elimination from the ConcaChampions
Monterrey was eliminated by Vancouver due to the away goals rule… despite Sergio Ramos's goal
A disastrous failure for Rayados de Monterrey, who were unable to get past the 2-2 draw against Vancouver and were eliminated in the round of 16 of this year’s Concachampions… against all odds. Even another goal from Sergio Ramos wasn’t enough. Despite tying the game in the 97th minute, the away goals rule condemned Monterrey.

Disappointment in Monterrey
After falling short of reaching the final in the previous edition, losing decisively to Columbus Crew, the Monterrey management decided to top off a highly attractive project made up of great European football players, such as Sergio Canales, Lucas Ocampos, and ‘Tecatito’ Corona, with the addition of Sergio Ramos.
After nine months away from the field following the end of his contract with Sevilla, Sergio Ramos recently joined Monterrey for his first adventure outside of Europe. The reality is that he hasn’t shown any signs of inactivity and, from the very first moment, he became the team’s main reference, wearing the captain’s armband.
Sergio Ramos reflects on the loss
His arrival generated a lot of excitement in Monterrey, and the reality is that his performance has been impeccable. However, it has also destabilized the team. “There was a drop in performance, unexpectedly, because with Sergio’s arrival, we added another player of high status, which I’m convinced was necessary,” said Demichelis, whose position is now in jeopardy.
As a leader, Sergio Ramos also stepped up to speak after Monterrey's elimination: “We have to be self-critical because, regardless of being eliminated today, we can do much more. We’ll now have time to prepare for the next game and try to forget this, because, obviously, it’s not pleasant for anyone.”
