Does Klopp Return to Coaching? Here's What The New Global Football Director of Red Bull Said
Jürgen Klopp, the renowned German coach, was presented this Tuesday in Salzburg as the new "Global Football Director" of Red Bull, the energy drink brand that owns and sponsors several teams worldwide. At 57 years old, Klopp will take on a strategic role as an advisor, without interfering in the day-to-day operations of the teams or replacing any coach, making it clear that his mission will be to guide and support the coaches and sports directors of the clubs within the conglomerate.
The former Liverpool manager, where he won the Champions League in 2019 and the first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020, emphasized that this new role is ideal for him. "It’s a different role. After a thousand games and press conferences, I wanted something new," said Klopp, who stated that he sees himself as a "counselor" who will influence the football culture at Red Bull.
Klopp explained that his role will be more strategic than operational, focusing on adding value to the Red Bull clubs without directly getting involved in their training sessions. "I will not coach any Red Bull club. I will not replace any coach," the German emphasized, stressing that his role will be to guide coaches and support player development.
The decision to join Red Bull has sparked controversy, especially in Germany, where the brand’s ownership of clubs and its altering of their history is criticized. However, Klopp defended the brand and highlighted their commitment to the sport, mentioning his visit to Leipzig and the passion he perceives in the fans. "Don’t they deserve good football? Of course, they do," he said.
Klopp, who signed a long-term contract with an annual salary between 10 and 12 million euros, has started his new role by visiting Paris and Leipzig, accompanied by former German international Mario Gómez, who is also part of the Red Bull team.
