FIFA and UEFA urge the RFEF to initiate urgent elections to elect a new president.
The Spanish government has been directly informed about the urgent need for the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to initiate an electoral process to democratically elect its next president. This indication was underscored by Emilio García Silvero, Legal Director of FIFA, and Angelo Rigopoulos, Managing Director of Integrity & Regulatory at UEFA, at the end of a meeting at the Higher Sports Council (CSD).
García Silvero highlighted the positive nature of the meeting, stating that the CSD seems willing to collaborate in resolving a problem that has persisted for over a year. According to him, "The RFEF is one of the most important federations in the world, if not the most important, and it needs to have a president to continue functioning properly." He also reminded that on December 11, the FIFA congress will take place, where the host of the 2030 World Cup will be elected, making it essential for the RFEF to be fully operational by that time.
On his part, Angelo Rigopoulos from UEFA warned about the serious consequences that could arise if the situation within the Spanish federation is not normalized. "If the electoral process is not initiated, FIFA and UEFA may be forced to intervene, as has happened with other federations." García Silvero confirmed this possibility but expressed his confidence that it would not be necessary to reach that point, as long as a positive response is observed from the RFEF and the involved authorities.
Álvaro de Miguel, Secretary General of the RFEF, called for the electoral process to be allowed to begin as soon as possible. "We don’t care if it is organized by the CSD or the TAD; what is important is that the process starts," he stated.
The CSD, for its part, was receptive to the demands of FIFA and UEFA and assured that efforts will be made to resolve the situation. The presence of Vicente del Bosque, as the head of the Normalization Commission overseeing the RFEF, was viewed positively by the international bodies, generating a climate of optimism regarding the swift resolution of the conflict.
