Luis de la Fuente: "In 2024, The Spirit of 2010 has Been Revived"
Spain's head coach, Luis de la Fuente, stated that in 2024, he once again felt "the spirit of 2010," the year Spain won its only World Cup. After securing the European Championship title in Germany, he expressed his pride in bringing joy back to the country through football. "What makes me happiest is seeing people enjoy themselves with a shared goal and a common ideal," he said in remarks distributed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
De la Fuente described 2024 as a year that will be hard to surpass, highlighting achievements such as winning every game in the Euro and playing excellent football. "The players are the main protagonists, but all of this was made possible thanks to the coaching staff and federation workers," he added. He also emphasized the team’s unity in Germany, where they achieved their objectives step by step.
The impact of the Nations League
The coach pointed out that the Nations League victory in 2023 was key to laying the foundation for their current success. "That title was the seed that put us in the international spotlight as a strong team, giving us the confidence to approach the Euro," he explained. He also highlighted the historic opportunity to become the first team to win the Nations League consecutively.
Looking ahead, De la Fuente acknowledged that the World Cup is the ultimate goal but stressed the importance of solidifying the project beforehand. "Spanish football is in great shape. Veteran players are extending their careers, and young players are reaching the elite level earlier and earlier. In my opinion, Spanish players are the best in the world; they just need opportunities to prove it," he concluded.
