Luiz Henrique and Botafogo Want Real Madrid in the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup
Botafogo winger Luiz Henrique, crowned Brazilian League champions this Sunday, shared his ambition to conquer the FIFA Club World Cup 2024. With determination, he stated that his team will aim to "make history" at the club, no matter that the final opponent could be the mighty Real Madrid.
"We’re going to treat them like any other team from here in Brazil. This team, when we step onto the field, we want to win, no matter if it's Real Madrid. We want to make history for Botafogo, so we’re going to fight against them," said the former Real Betis player in an interview with Globo from the pitch at Nilson Santos stadium.
Road to the Final
After a successful end to the season, which saw Botafogo win both the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Championship in just eight days, the team is now gearing up for the Club World Cup in Qatar. To reach the highly anticipated final against Real Madrid, the Rio de Janeiro side must first overcome two elimination rounds: they will face Mexican club Pachuca this Wednesday. If they win, they will meet Egypt’s Al-Ahly for a spot in the final, where the UEFA Champions League winner will already be waiting.
"We know it’s going to be a tough match, but nothing is impossible. A lot of people doubted us. It was tough to win the Libertadores and the Brasileirão, but this group is a family and we made it happen on the field," said Luiz Henrique.
A Leader On and Off the Field
With seven goals and three assists in 36 league matches, Luiz Henrique was named the Best Player of the Brazilian Championship 2024. At 23, the talented forward has been a key part of Artur Jorge’s system. A product of Fluminense, he returned to Brazil this year after a rather quiet season at Real Betis and has regained his top form.
"Against Real Madrid it’s going to be tough, but we’ll give our all to come out on top," he concluded, confident that Botafogo will be in the final to face the Spanish giants.
