Not Suárez or Benzema: This Is the Best Striker of the Century According to Thierry Henry
French legend Thierry Henry is certain: among this generation's great strikers, one name stands above the rest. For him, Robert Lewandowski has earned the title as the top center forward of the era—and his numbers back it up.
“The numbers don’t lie”
In an era that has seen elite strikers like Karim Benzema, Luis Suárez, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and Sergio Agüero, former Arsenal and France star Thierry Henry made his stance clear. Excluding Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who he considers to be in a league of their own, the best center forward of this generation is Robert Lewandowski.
Speaking after the Polish striker’s brace in FC Barcelona’s Champions League quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund, Henry praised his consistent excellence: “He’s the best striker of this generation. What he’s done at Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and now at Barcelona is simply remarkable.”
Henry addressed those who argue that playing with great teammates makes things easier: “People say it’s easier when you’re surrounded by stars, but not everyone shines in those conditions. Antoine Griezmann went to Barcelona and struggled. It’s not that simple.”
Lewandowski’s future impact at Barcelona
At 36, Robert Lewandowski continues to lead Barcelona's attack with remarkable consistency. This season alone, he has already scored 40 goals in 45 matches across all competitions, forming the heart of one of Europe’s deadliest attacking trios.
But beyond his current form, Henry believes the Polish striker still has a lot to contribute to the Catalan club. “If he stays, surrounded by young talents bringing energy and creativity, he can keep finishing plays. The numbers don’t lie,” he said.
With Barcelona undergoing a generational transition under the guidance of Hansi Flick, Lewandowski’s experience and clinical finishing could prove vital—not just in winning titles, but in mentoring the next wave of talent coming through La Masia. His presence could bridge the gap between rebuilding and remaining competitive in Europe.
Many agree that Lewandowski was unfairly denied a Ballon d’Or in 2020 due to the pandemic. But whether or not that accolade ever comes, Henry believes the striker’s place in football history is already secure—and with the right pieces around him, his legacy at Barcelona is far from finished.
