Roberto Martínez Comments on Cristiano Ronaldo's Age
"Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t play like a 39-year-old," said Portugal's national team coach, Spaniard Roberto Martínez, on Monday. He described the team's captain as "an example" in the world of football.
“Cristiano doesn’t work or play like a 39-year-old,” Martínez remarked during a press conference in Glasgow, where Portugal will face Scotland in the Nations League on Tuesday.
When asked about the massive crowds Ronaldo draws wherever he goes, Martínez described him as "a unique case" that "everyone can enjoy."
"When you arrive at a place like this, you realize what an iconic figure he is and what a unique career he’s had. He’s an example, with the number of goals he’s scored and the trophies he’s won," Martínez commented.
Martínez also warned about the danger posed by Scotland, "a team that is growing a lot and believes strongly in what they do," recalling Scotland's victory over Spain in 2023.
Meanwhile, midfielder Vitinha highlighted the physical strength of the Scottish team and emphasized that Portugal must "prioritize the technical aspect" of their game.
The PSG player, coached by Luis Enrique, also noted that Portugal has "great overall capacity," saying, "We are a team with a very complete group of players who complement each other well."
Portugal, the undefeated leader of Group A1 in the Nations League, will face Scotland again on Tuesday, having previously defeated them 2-1 in the second matchday of the competition.
