Xabi Alonso Avoids Future Talk and Stays Focused on Leverkusen’s Season
Despite ongoing speculation linking him to several European giants, Xabi Alonso made it clear on Thursday that his full attention remains on the current campaign with Bayer Leverkusen. Speaking at a press conference following the international break, the Spanish coach declined to offer any updates on his future, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on the season ahead.
When asked why he hasn't addressed his plans—especially considering he confirmed his continuity early last year—Alonso was brief but firm.
“It was a good break, but there's nothing more. We’re all focused on the season and the matches ahead. We don’t want distractions,” he stated.
Alonso acknowledged that the situation differs from the previous season, when he publicly committed to Leverkusen amid strong links to Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool.
“Last season, there was something to decide. This season, there’s nothing to decide,” he added.
The 42-year-old coach is under contract with Leverkusen until June 20, 2026, so there's no contractual urgency. However, his rising reputation and managerial success have kept him on the radar of Europe’s top clubs, especially with potential coaching changes looming in the summer of 2025.

Leverkusen’s title defense still alive
After winning their first-ever Bundesliga title last season, Leverkusen are once again in the thick of the title race. They currently sit second, just six points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Alonso's tactical acumen and leadership remain central to their ambitions.
With a demanding stretch of fixtures ahead, including key Bundesliga and European matches, Alonso stressed that internal focus is essential:
“We’re only thinking about the next game. That’s the only way to perform well in the final stretch.”
