Kimmich lauds 'convincing' Bayern reaction in Leipzig triumph
Bayern Munich bounced back from their shock defeat to Mainz a week ago by thrashing RB Leipzig to end the year at the Bundesliga summit.
Joshua Kimmich lauded Bayern Munich's "convincing" response to their loss to Mainz after thumping RB Leipzig 5-1 on Friday to move seven points clear at the summit.
Jamal Musiala's goal inside a minute was quickly cancelled out by Benjamin Sesko, with two sides scoring inside the first two minutes of a Bundesliga match for the first time.
Konrad Laimer restored Bayern's advantage before Kimmich added his side's third nine minutes before the break at the Allianz Arena.
After the interval, Leroy Sane and Alphonso Davies added further gloss to an impressive display, with Vincent Kompany's side taking their league goal tally to 47 goals.
The result came after Bayern were handed their first Bundesliga defeat of the season by Mainz last week, with Jae-Sung Lee's brace doing the damage.
"It was certainly a very good performance. We started brilliantly, then conceded the equaliser. But you could tell from the start that we really wanted to win," Kimmich said.
"And we did that in convincing fashion. The coach really sets the example and we players also felt that Mainz was our worst performance of the season.
"It was hugely important to show a reaction."
Friday's win marked Bayern's final game of 2024, signing off in style against a Leipzig side that had won four of their last five games in all competitions coming into the match.
Kompany's side accumulated an expected goals (xG) total of 3.25 from their 22 shots, while also restricting their opponents to just one shot on target during the contest.
Harry Kane was unable to add to the 14 goals he has netted in 15 Bundesliga outings this term, despite having more shots (four) than any of his team-mates against Leipzig.
The division's leading scorer echoed the thoughts of Kimmich, but insisted that Bayern would return after the festive break looking to carry on their impressive form.
"We produced a good performance. We were very dominant, moved the ball well and were good in our counter-pressing. It's a good way to round off the year," Kane said.
"It's always important for the feeling, you always want to go into a break with a win. We're top of the table, which gives us a good feeling for the new year.
"We can enjoy the break a bit, but then it's about looking ahead."
