River Plate Presents its World Cup Champions with Victory over Mexico
River Plate concluded its preseason with a 2-0 win over the Mexico National Team on Tuesday, in their final friendly before the official start of the 2025 season. In a packed Estadio Monumental with more than 86,000 spectators, the team managed by Marcelo Gallardo triumphed thanks to goals from Giuliano Galoppo and Colombian Miguel Ángel Borja, who scored to seal the win on this special day.
During the match, River Plate also took the opportunity to introduce its seven new signings for the upcoming season. The club presented the four returning players: Enzo Pérez (from Estudiantes de La Plata), Lucas Martínez Quarta (from Fiorentina in Italy), Gonzalo Montiel (from Sevilla in Spain), and Sebastián Driussi (from Austin FC in MLS). Additionally, three new recruits made their debut at the club: Giuliano Galoppo (from São Paulo in Brazil), Gonzalo Tapia (from Universidad Católica de Chile), and Matías Rojas (from Inter Miami in MLS).
The victory over the Mexico National Team adds to another preseason win for River Plate, a 1-2 victory against Universidad de Chile in Concepción. Most of the preseason took place in San Martín de Los Andes, a Patagonian city where Gallardo's team worked ahead of their official debut.
River Plate's first official match will be this Saturday when they face Platense in the opening round of the Copa de la Liga Profesional Apertura. Additionally, on March 5, the team will play against Talleres de Córdoba in the Supercopa Internacional 2023, which could mark Gallardo's first title since his return to the club on August 5 of last year.
On the other hand, the 2-0 defeat to River Plate marks the end of the Mexico National Team's South American tour, which began with a 0-2 win over Internacional de Porto Alegre. These matches served as preparation for the upcoming Concacaf Nations League final, where Mexico will face Canada in the semifinals on March 20, aiming to secure their first title in this competition.
