Barcelona’s Potential Rivals in The Champions League Round of 16
The new Champions League format has created great anticipation regarding the matchups that will define the knockout stages. For FC Barcelona, already qualified for the Round of 16, the possible rivals are becoming clearer as the group stage nears its conclusion. With a format that includes a play-off between the teams ranked ninth to 24th in the standings, the Catalan club is close to knowing which team they will face in the next round.
If Barça finishes first or second in the overall standings, they will avoid facing other favorites until later stages. Based on current projections, Hansi Flick's side would face the winner of one of the play-off matchups. At the moment, these matchups could include games like Club Brugge-Benfica or Milan-PSV, meaning Barcelona could face any of these four teams. Additionally, the second leg of the Round of 16 would take place at the Spotify Camp Nou, an important advantage for the Blaugranas.
However, the scenario may shift depending on the results of the final group-stage matchday. A victory for Barcelona against Atalanta, combined with a loss for Liverpool against PSV, would place the Catalan side at the top of the standings. This first-place finish could allow them to avoid tougher opponents on their path to the final. On the other hand, a loss to the Italian side could open the door for teams like Atlético Madrid, Arsenal, Inter, or even Brest to claim the second spot and alter the matchups.
The final matchday, scheduled for Wednesday, January 29, will be key in determining all the pairings. On that day, 18 games will be played simultaneously, promising maximum excitement. Additionally, the play-off round, set to take place in February, will be the final step before confirming all the rivals for the Round of 16, a stage that will kick off in March.
With the current format and the quality of the teams involved, Barcelona must be prepared for any challenge. Whether against Club Brugge, Benfica, Milan, or PSV, Flick’s squad will need to prove they are ready to contend for the European title, relying on their squad depth and the advantage of playing the decisive second leg at home.
