Independiente del Valle Possible Lineup Against Deportes Tolima in the 2026 Copa Libertadores
The Ecuadorian side head to Ibagué in excellent form as they begin their pursuit of a place in the quarterfinals.
Independiente del Valle visit Deportes Tolima this Tuesday, August 18, at Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro in the first leg of the 2026 Copa Libertadores Round of 16, looking to secure a positive result before deciding the tie on home soil.
Joaquín Papa's side arrive in Ibagué riding an impressive 13-match unbeaten run across all competitions, a streak that began toward the end of their Copa Libertadores group-stage campaign.
The Ecuadorian club will look to carry that momentum into the knockout stage, but the challenge will be significant. Tolima have won all three of their home matches in this year's Libertadores without conceding a single goal.
Joaquín Papa Prepares His Starting XI Against Tolima
Aldair Quintana is expected to start in goal for Independiente del Valle in the opening match of what promises to be a closely contested series.
Daykol Romero, Andy Velasco, Juan Viacava and Layan Loor are projected to form the back line, while Jordy Alcívar and Juan Angulo should feature in midfield.
Further forward, Hugo Quintana, Ronald Briones and Emerson Pata are expected to provide the attacking creativity behind Carlos González.

Independiente del Valle Possible Lineup
Joaquín Papa is expected to maintain the core of the team that has helped Independiente del Valle put together one of their strongest runs of the season.
Independiente del Valle possible XI: Aldair Quintana; Daykol Romero, Andy Velasco, Juan Viacava, Layan Loor; Jordy Alcívar, Juan Angulo, Hugo Quintana, Ronald Briones, Emerson Pata, Carlos González.
Head coach: Joaquín Papa.
Independiente del Valle Enter the Match Unbeaten in 13
The Ecuadorian club's impressive form could be one of its biggest weapons in Ibagué. Independiente del Valle have gone 13 consecutive matches without defeat across all competitions.
Their most recent outing ended in a 3-2 victory over Delfín, while they had previously beaten Liga de Quito 2-0 and Deportivo Cuenca 1-0.
That momentum could prove crucial against a Tolima side that has been particularly difficult to beat at Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro during this Libertadores campaign.
Independiente del Valle Chase Another Deep Libertadores Run
The Ecuadorian club are no strangers to reaching the latter stages of the Copa Libertadores. Their best campaign came in 2016, when they reached the final before finishing runners-up to Atlético Nacional.
More recently, Independiente del Valle reached the quarterfinals in 2023 after eliminating Deportivo Pereira 2-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16.
They will now attempt to return to the final eight, but first must overcome a curious piece of history: Independiente del Valle have never beaten Tolima in the Libertadores. Their two meetings in 2022 produced a 2-2 draw in Ecuador and a 1-0 Tolima victory in Ibagué.
