Memphis Accuses Corinthians of Breaking Contract Renewal Agreement
Memphis Depay claimed he had an agreement to renew his contract with Corinthians for two more years and warned that he will defend his interests after the club announced his departure for financial reasons.

The relationship between Memphis Depay and Corinthians has taken another tense turn. The Dutch forward accused the Brazilian club's board on Tuesday of breaking an agreement that, according to him, had already been reached to extend his contract for two more seasons.
Through his social media accounts, Memphis expressed his disappointment after learning of Corinthians' decision not to move forward with the renewal. The 32-year-old forward claimed that the new deal had been agreed upon with different departments within the club before some individuals decided to back out.
Memphis Says an Agreement With Corinthians Was in Place
According to the former Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid player, the renewal had received approval from the club's president as well as its sporting, legal, and financial departments.
“Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honor our agreement reached to extend my contract for two more years,” Memphis wrote.
The forward also made it clear that he intends to take action to defend his interests and said he will provide more details about the situation in the coming days. Memphis stated that he respected the club throughout the entire process but now believes it is necessary to respond following the board's decision.
His contract with the Brazilian side expired at the end of July, bringing an end to nearly two years with the club.
Corinthians Cites Financial Reasons
For its part, Corinthians explained that the decision not to renew the contract was based exclusively on the club's financial situation and the need to protect its financial stability.
Club president Osmar Stabile is expected to hold a press conference in the coming days to provide further details about the circumstances that led to the breakdown in negotiations.
According to reports from Brazilian media, Corinthians reportedly owes Memphis Depay close to 42 million Brazilian reais, approximately $8 million, not including interest.
The Dutch forward joined Corinthians in September 2024 and finished his spell with 20 goals in 79 appearances. He also won three trophies: the Campeonato Paulista and Copa do Brasil in 2025, as well as the Supercopa Rei in 2026.
