Gustavo Costas Ahead of Copa Sudamericana Final: "Tomorrow, No Matter What, We Have to Win"
Racing Club coach Gustavo Costas expressed his excitement on Friday over his team’s qualification for the Copa Sudamericana final, set to take place Saturday in Asunción against Brazil’s Cruzeiro. Costas made it clear that winning is the only option.
"Tomorrow, no matter what, we have to win. Whatever it takes, we have to win so we can fulfill this dream and, as I’ve said before, because the fans deserve it," Costas said with a smile when asked about the advice he’d give himself as a fan.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the match at Estadio General Pablo Rojas, known as "La Nueva Olla," Costas shared his dream of bringing home an international trophy after 36 years without one for the Avellaneda-based club.
"I’ve said since I took over that Racing needs something international, so this generation can witness it. If, God willing, we can achieve it tomorrow, let’s not wait another 35 or 37 years, or we’ll lose too many generations," Costas emphasized.
The coach expressed unwavering confidence in his players, describing them as an "amazing group" who share a deep camaraderie by singing Racing songs and bonding over mate.
He also admitted to being highly emotional, saying, "I cry every ten minutes," and encouraged fans to remember the elders who passed down the "beautiful sickness" of being Racing supporters.
Costas also appreciated the chance to play this final in Paraguay, a country where he feels deeply connected to its people.
"It’s amazing how everything worked out. God placed us against Cruzeiro, the team I wanted to face, and in my second home. It all feels perfect," he added.
Argentine-born Chilean goalkeeper Gabriel Arias highlighted the significance of this final, especially considering Brazil’s dominance in the tournament in recent years.
"This is important for Argentine football, but even more so for Racing," Arias said.
He also praised teammates Roger Martínez, Johan Carbonero, and Juan Fernando Quintero, emphasizing their ability to change the game at any moment.
"They’re incredible players, and I’m just happy to have that kind of quality in our squad," Arias concluded.
The Copa Sudamericana final promises to be a thrilling clash, as Racing seeks to break a decades-long drought and deliver a historic victory for its fans.
