Estevão to Face His Future Club as Palmeiras Takes on Chelsea in Club World Cup Quarterfinals
The 2025 Club World Cup just confirmed its first quarterfinal matchup: Palmeiras vs. Chelsea, and it comes with a personal twist for rising star Estevão. The 18-year-old left-footed forward, currently shining for the Brazilian side, already has a deal in place to join the London club next season. He played a key role in Palmeiras' 1–0 win over Botafogo, especially standing out in the second half.
In a poetic turn of events, Estevão will play his final game for Palmeiras against the very team he’s about to join. Chelsea, on the other hand, advanced after a wild 4–1 win over Benfica, a match that included a two-hour lightning delay and went to extra time. Their clash is set for July 4 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.
Tension and emotions on the rise
In a recent interview, Estevão admitted he’s been feeling nervous amid all the changes, prompting coach Abel Ferreira to defend him in front of the media. “He’s so pure and innocent—he was just being honest about how he feels. That’s normal,” said the Portuguese manager during a press conference, highlighting how tough it can be for a teenager whose life is changing overnight.
Ferreira didn’t hold back when calling out the media either. “I get that this kind of thing sells and gets clicks, but this isn’t the way. The one time he opens up, this is the result,” he said, asking for more empathy toward young players who are still growing both on and off the pitch.
More than just a game
Estevão is now in a unique spot: trying to eliminate the team he’ll soon be joining. If he delivers a big performance, he’ll only raise the hype surrounding his move to Chelsea. But if he struggles or his team gets knocked out, his debut in England could come with added pressure. Either way, this game could be a turning point in his young career.
The young talent—who rose through Palmeiras’ youth ranks and broke into the first team in style—is now at the heart of a story bigger than football. One game, two teams, and one spotlight on Estevão, the Brazilian wonderkid who's about to cross the Atlantic.
