Atlético Madrid's Winning Streak Snapped by Leganés Header
A header by Serbian defender Matija Nastasic early in the second half (1-0), following a corner kick, was enough for Leganés to defeat Atlético de Madrid, whose unbeaten streak came to an end after Antoine Griezmann missed a crucial penalty in the dying minutes.
Atlético dominates but lacks luck
The rojiblanco team, riding a historic 15-match winning streak and leading LaLiga EA Sports, visited Leganés, a team that had conceded 11 goals in its last three home matches but had also shocked Barcelona with an away victory.
From the outset, Atlético dominated the game. In the first half alone, they struck the woodwork three times: a long-range shot by Julián Álvarez, a close-range effort by Griezmann, and an attempt by Conor Gallagher. Meanwhile, Leganés stayed compact in defense and created a couple of dangerous chances that tested Jan Oblak.
Nastasic, the unexpected hero
In the second half, Leganés came out with renewed energy. In the 49th minute, a well-executed set piece gave them the lead. A corner kick was powerfully headed home by Matija Nastasic, who outmuscled Pablo Barrios to score.
Atlético pressed for an equalizer, with Ángel Correa firing a low shot and a penalty awarded after VAR review for a handball by Sergio González. However, Griezmann missed the spot kick, shooting wide and sealing the leader’s defeat.
Leadership at risk
With this result, Atlético de Madrid now faces the possibility of losing its top spot in LaLiga. Real Madrid could overtake them with a win against UD Las Palmas on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabéu.
