Bellingham Sent Off for Insulting Referee
Despite playing with ten men for more than half the match, Carlo Ancelotti’s team managed to hold on and earn three crucial points in the battle for LaLiga.
Real Madrid secured a hard-fought victory at El Sadar, but the biggest controversy of the match was the expulsion of Jude Bellingham. The English midfielder received a straight red card in the 39th minute after an exchange of words with referee Munuera Montero, amid growing tension due to constant protests from Madrid’s players.
Bellingham Could Face a Lengthy Suspension
Bellingham’s red card could have serious consequences, as he faces a potential suspension ranging from four to twelve matches, depending on the referee’s report. According to the Disciplinary Code of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), if the Englishman insulted the referee, he would miss key league games against Girona, Betis, and Rayo Vallecano, as well as the Copa del Rey semifinal against Real Sociedad. If the incident is deemed an act of disrespect rather than a direct insult, the suspension would be reduced to two or three matches.
The match was filled with protests from Real Madrid players, who repeatedly questioned the referee’s decisions. From home, the injured Dani Carvajal reacted on social media with an ironic message, suggesting that the red card was something to be expected. Meanwhile, Davide Ancelotti had to calm his father down at halftime, as the Italian coach, already booked for his complaints, was eager to confront the referee.
Madrid Holds On for the Win
Before the red card, Real Madrid had taken the lead in the 15th minute thanks to a goal from Kylian Mbappé, who capitalized on a defensive mistake by Osasuna. The visitors had multiple chances to extend their lead, with Vinícius Júnior particularly active in attack. However, frustration grew as the referee dismissed several potential fouls inside the opposing box.
Despite being down to ten men, the Madrid side managed to close spaces and withstand Osasuna’s pressure, with the home team pushing forward with the support of their fans at El Sadar. The hosts tried to make the most of their numerical advantage but couldn’t break through the defensive solidity of Andriy Lunin and company. With this result, Real Madrid remains at the top of the table, though Bellingham’s potential suspension could become a major concern in the upcoming fixtures.
