Kylian Mbappé continues to be a topic of conversation, and for good reason—he's considered one of the best footballers on the planet. However, at this point, the talk around him has shifted more to his underwhelming performance with Real Madrid than anything else, even leading to comparisons with other players who are delivering better results.

One of those players is Lamine Yamal, who, when it comes to creating chances, is far superior to the Frenchman, according to these numbers.

According to ESPN, when analyzing big chances created — defined as plays where it's reasonably expected that a teammate will score — Mbappé's stats in La Liga show a more modest performance. The Real Madrid forward has created only two big chances so far this season.

In comparison, other standout players in the competition are far ahead:

• Raphinha (Barcelona): 14 big chances created, leading this category.

• Lamine Yamal (Barcelona): 12 chances, showing his impact despite his young age.

• Antoine Griezmann (Atlético de Madrid) and Vinícius Jr. (Real Madrid): 7 chances each.

These numbers highlight that, while Mbappé remains a key figure at Real Madrid, his ability to create significant opportunities for his teammates is far behind that of other offensive leaders in La Liga.

Mbappé's success will be measured by goals

The minimum goal tally Mbappé should reach is what Jude Bellingham (19) and Vinícius Jr. (15) achieved last season, as they were the top scorers in La Liga.

If Mbappé surpasses these numbers, with a tally between 25 to 30 goals, as he did in the last four seasons with PSG, the criticism around him will likely subside.

But the truth is that the powerful Real Madrid team doesn’t look anything like the squad from last season, and this has been a constant observation since the start of this campaign. It's even been a subject Carlo Ancelotti has had to address.

Mbappé had more goals with PSG

At this stage of the season with PSG, Mbappé already had three goals in the UEFA Champions League, along with 14 more in Ligue 1 over 13 matchdays.

With Real Madrid, he has nine goals in 17 matches across all competitions, seven of them in La Liga. This makes him the second-highest scorer, just behind Vinícius Jr., who is currently injured.

Mbappé's contribution to creating chances is lacking

According to ESPN, Mbappé has created 13 chances in La Liga this season, a respectable number, but far behind the leaders in this category.

For example, Barcelona's Raphinha tops the list with 44 created chances, establishing himself as one of the main candidates for Player of the Season. Other players have also significantly outperformed Mbappé in this aspect:

• Vinícius Jr. (Real Madrid): 29 chances, more than double his teammate Mbappé.

• Antoine Griezmann (Atlético de Madrid) and Lamine Yamal (Barcelona): 26 chances each.

In total, 14 forwards in La Liga, out of the 127 who have played at least one minute this season, have created more opportunities than the French star.
