Laporta Explains the Olmo Case and Responds to his Critics
Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona, called out the existence of "a false apocalyptic narrative" pushed by "certain groups," whether due to "ignorance, bad faith, or both." In a packed press conference with 87 journalists from 50 countries, joined by his board and the sports commission, Laporta harshly criticized the opposition.
"It wasn’t about siding with Laporta; it was about siding with Barça," he said, referring to the tensions around the registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor. He also questioned: "Does anyone seriously think the Barça president would resign because of a decision from LaLiga or the **Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)?".
Criticism of the opposition and praise for the team
Laporta accused the opposition of putting their interests above the club's: "Poor Barça if it ends up in the hands of those who currently act as the opposition. They've destabilized the team and seemed to want us to fail in our attempts to register these two players."
The president especially appreciated the victory in the Spanish Super Cup: "For the mental strength shown by the players, Hansi Flick, and the entire staff." He also revealed that both Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, along with their families, endured a lot due to the registration complications.
Financial management and institutional achievements
Laporta highlighted the progress under his leadership: "We’ve returned to LaLiga's 1:1 financial fair play ratio, signed the best sportswear deal in the world with Nike, and are building a brand-new stadium." He emphasized that his strategic plan focused on increasing revenue, cutting costs, keeping the club's ownership model intact, and ensuring that members didn’t have to contribute extra funds.
"All of this was achieved through well-planned work, not by coincidence or external help," the president defended, adding that the club has stood firm against internal and external attacks.
A clear message: "The badge doesn’t get stained"
Laporta wrapped up his remarks with a powerful message: "This is an attack on the badge, and the badge doesn’t get stained. Those trying to destabilize us, both inside and outside, will have to try much harder to bring us down and stop us from being a global reference in sports."
